Although RAC produces export fruit for the European market that market is dominated by European growers. Due in part to the rising gas prices and the inherent loss of fruit quality due to delays involved in air travel, RAC has extended its farming operations to Zambujeira do Mar, Portugal to provide fruit specifically for European consumption.

Though the operation is currently quite small, RAC and its customer, Berry Gardens (a joint venture between Driscoll Strawberry Associates and two European companies) believe there is substantial growth potential for berry cultivation. Due to the climate, which has similarities to the climate of Santa Maria California, Portugal has the potential to grow strawberries and raspberries year round.

European growers typically focus on producing as much fruit as possible. This leaves the quality and taste niche wide open for premium quality fruit. RAC has entered Portugal with the goal of becoming one of the premier berry growers in Europe.
