Success Stories - James
.
James started off as an intern for Berrymex (an affiliated RAC company in Mexico) at the young age of 20. Although only in his junior year at UC Davis, James soon realized that his future laid within the agriculture community. Now at the age of 23 James is a full-time employee in the Baja district under the research and development department. Having flown up for a couple days, he sat down with RAC and talked about his transition from the United States to Mexico, and his current work.
.
RAC: How was the change from being a college student to a full time employee?
James: It is really much of the same stuff, you see we have to do background research and study before we start all of our research projects. It is the applied techniques and hands-on experiments that have really taught me a lot.
RAC: How was the change from living in the USA and moving to Mexico?
James: I've always been used to experiencing a country through trips and vacation. When you move there, you really do play a part in the society as a whole. This allowed me to immerse myself into the community. It has been challenging, different, interesting -both socially and professionally. There are of course a lot of tradeoffs, however in the end it has been worth it. It truly is an on-going experience.
RAC: How has the RAC operation in Baja changed since you have moved there?
James: It has gone from a small, practically family operated farm, to a large scale multi-crop multi-department business. The company continues to expand in both acreage and with the amount of employees. Although the growth rate is high, I think things are getting solidified, and we will soon be operating at a high profit margin. The managerial structure is defined and we now have the team learning how to work together. The basics are down, and we are now fine tuning; both agriculturally and financially.
